เอกสารศึกษานี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์เส้นทางที่ลดเลี้ยวของความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตไทย-จีนในช่วง 25 ปีแรก (ค.ศ. 1975-2000) กล่าวคือ แม้ความสัมพันธ์จะเปลี่ยนจากศัตรูกลายเป็นหุ้นส่วนทางยุทธศาสตร์หลังเกิดปัญหากัมพูชาเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1978 แต่สองประเทศก็ยังมีมุมมองต่อการแก้ปัญหาที่ต่างกัน และเมื่อปัญหานี้เริ่มคลี่คลายในปลายทศวรรษ 1980 ความเป็นหุ้นส่วนก็ลดความสำาคัญลง ไทยเริ่มดำาเนินนโยบายที่สอดคล้องกับผลประโยชน์ของจีนน้อยลงทั้งกรณีกัมพูชา ทิเบต และไต้หวัน จนเมื่อถึงกลางทศวรรษ 1990 ความสำคัญที่เพิ่มขึ้นของจีนต่อความมั่นคงและเศรษฐกิจของภูมิภาคทำให้ไทยต้องกระชับความสัมพันธ์อีกครั้ง และนำไปสู่กรอบความร่วมมือระยะยาวกับจีนเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1999

Abstract

The study paper aims to analyze the twists and turns in Thailand China diplomatic ties during the first 25 years (1975-2000). Although the Cambodian problem since 1978 had transformed the relationship from enmity to strategic partnership, the two countries still hold different views regarding the resolution. As the partnership gradually lost its momentum in the late 1980s following the amelioration of the Cambodian problem, Thailand began to pursue its own approaches towards Cambodia and the Tibet and Taiwan issues, which were less congruent with China’s interests. By the mid-1990s, however, given China’s ascendancy in regional security and economy, Thailand decided to revitalize the relationship and later established a framework for long-term cooperation with China in 1999.
