Major changes of foreign policy direction almost always interest scholars, practitioners, as well as observers of international relations. This is even more so if such changes are abrupt. General Chatichai Choonhavan's policy of turning Indochina from a battlefield to a marketplace is unique not only in its formation but also in the way it played out. Battlefile to Marketplace: Responses to Thailand's Major Foreign Policy Change examines the path of its inception, implementation and consequences. It will reveal how a relatively lesser power such as Thailand can independently initiate a new policy direction of an issue of significant interest to many other players, including great powers.

Salinee Phonprapai is a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, currently Director of Division 1, Department of East Asian Affairs. Her overeas assignment includes her postings at the Royal Thai Embassies in Yangon and Tokyo. Thanks to a Thai Government scholarship, she attended universitites in the UK and received a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2003.
