On 21 July 2021, the International Studies Center (ISC) hosted a book launch and discussion on “Rivers of Iron: Railroads and Chinese Power in Southeast Asia.” The session was moderated by Dr. Anuson Chinvanno, Director of ISC.

Three co-authors, namely, Dr. David M. Lampton, Professor Emeritus, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Dr. Selina Ho, Assistant Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, and Dr. Kuik Cheng-Chwee, Associate Professor, Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), National University of Malaysia, examined China’s efforts to create an intercountry railway system connecting China and its Southeast Asian neighbours. They also discussed the political strengths and weaknesses of the plan, as well as the capacity of the impacted countries to resist, shape, and even take advantage of China’s wide-reaching actions.
