The book Siam's Foreign Relations in the Reign of King Mongkut, 1851-1868 recounts the development in the relation of Modern Siam with the West. The change which, within a comparatively short reign of 18 years, King Mongkut had wrought upon his country's way of contending with the Western expansion was nothing short of revolution. From 'the remore corner of the Earth' to quote one of his favorite expressions, he had brought Siam out into the limelight and had gained for her the civilised world's recognition that she was a member of the Family of Nations. In the place of the virtual isolation in which King Rama III sought to keep his country, King Mongkut bequathed to his successor a firm foundation for Siam's venture into international politics, for it was from his modest one-man Consulates - the man invariably a foreigner - in the various capitals of Europe and Asia, that diplomatic machinery of Siam was developed.
