The International Studies Center (ISC) organised a seminar on “Trade and Treaties: Transformation of Siam(?)” on 5 September 2025 at Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse. Three speakers, namely Dr. Tej Bunnag, Secretary-General of the Thai Red Cross Society and Chairperson of ISC Advisory Board, Associate Professor Dr. Chachaphon Jayaphorn, Acting Director of the Secretariat Office of the Sangha Supreme Council in Thailand and Dr. Patcharaviral Charoenpacharaporn, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, discussed historical context of the Treaty between Kingdom of Siam and Great Britain concluded and signed at Bangkok 20th June 1826 known as the Burney Treaty, the Treaty between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Siam concluded and signed at Bangkok 18th April 1855 known as the Bowring Treaty and the Agreement between the Siamese Royal Commissioners and Harry R. Parkes, Esquire on the part of H.B.M. Government, concluded at Bangkok 13th May 1856 known as the Parkes Agreement. They also exchanged views on the impacts of the three treaties on the economic and social developments of Siam. Approximately 100 participants, including former ministers, former Thai ambassadors, diplomats, historians, scholars and university students attended the event.
